Pregnant Woman in Telangana Dies by Suicide After Husband Questions Paternity

A 23-year-old pregnant woman in Telangana died by suicide after her husband and mother-in-law allegedly subjected her to harassment and demanded a DNA test for her unborn child, police said.

The incident occurred in Gadipeddapur village, Alladurg mandal, Medak district. The woman, identified as Sushmita, married G Abhilash about 18 months ago and was five months pregnant.

According to a complaint filed by her mother, Janabai, Sushmita faced physical and mental harassment from her husband, who suspected her fidelity. The mother-in-law also allegedly ill-treated her.

Janabai told police that she and her husband visited their daughter's home on June 23 to discuss the baby shower ceremony. During the visit, an argument broke out, and Abhilash allegedly demanded a DNA test in front of both families. Community elders intervened and temporarily resolved the matter, but harassment resumed, the family claims. Two days later, Sushmita was found hanging at her residence.

Police arrested Abhilash and his mother. 'They were produced before the magistrate and sent to judicial remand,' said Alladurg police station Sub-Inspector D Shankar.

A case has been registered under Sections 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives), 108 (abetment of suicide), and Section 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, based on the complaint.

The body was sent to Sangareddy Government General Hospital for post-mortem examination before being handed over to the family. The victim's mother has demanded a thorough investigation.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
