Pradeep Rai wins Supreme Court Bar Association presidential election
Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai has been elected as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), a body representing lawyers practicing in the Supreme Court of India. The election results were announced late on Tuesday night, August 18, 2026.
Mr. Rai received 822 votes in a multi-candidate contest. His closest competitor, Anupam Lal Das, secured 451 votes, followed by Adish Agarwalla (412), Gaurav Bhatia (370), Sukumar Pattjoshi (269), Siddharth Mridul (217), and Mahalakshmi Pavani (128).
In other results, Senior Advocate Rahul Kaushik was elected Vice-President, and advocate Pragya Baghel was elected Secretary. The post of Treasurer went to advocate Amarendra Kumar Singh, while advocate Meneesh Dubey was elected Joint Secretary.
The SCBA is a key institution in the Indian legal system, representing the interests of lawyers who practice before the Supreme Court. It plays a significant role in matters relating to the administration of justice, legal reforms, and the welfare of its members. The association also negotiates with the judiciary on issues such as infrastructure, court procedures, and the conduct of legal practice.
The election saw a voter turnout that reflected the active participation of the Supreme Court bar. The process was conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of the SCBA, with polling held through the day. Counting took place after the close of voting, and results were declared late in the night.
The newly elected office bearers will take charge for the upcoming term, succeeding the previous executive committee. Their tenure is expected to focus on addressing the professional concerns of lawyers, including the smooth functioning of court hearings, digital infrastructure for legal processes, and ensuring better facilities within the court premises.
Bar association elections in India are closely watched by the legal community, as the leadership often represents the profession in dialogues with the judiciary and the government. The outcome is considered a reflection of the collective mandate of the lawyers on various professional and administrative issues.
Mr. Rai's victory in a crowded field indicates a clear preference among the voters. The defeated candidates issued no immediate statements, but the election was conducted peacefully. The SCBA has announced that the formal handover of responsibilities will take place in the coming days.
