Potential Defections in Shiv Sena (UBT) Could Reshape Maharashtra Political Dynamics

Reports indicate that six of the nine Lok Sabha MPs from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction may switch allegiance to the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde. If confirmed, this would mark the second significant split in the party since the 2022 rebellion that divided the Shiv Sena and led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.

While such a move would directly weaken Uddhav Thackeray's faction, it could also alter the power balance within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Shiv Sena (Shinde), and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Currently, in the Lok Sabha, the BJP holds nine seats from Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena (UBT) holds nine, and the Shinde-led faction has seven. If six MPs defect, the Shinde faction's strength would increase to 13, equaling the Congress party's tally in the state and potentially shifting dynamics within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

In the Maharashtra Assembly, the BJP remains the dominant partner with 132 MLAs in the 288-member house, compared to 57 for the Shinde Sena. After the 2024 assembly elections, Devendra Fadnavis replaced Shinde as Chief Minister, with Shinde accepting the Deputy Chief Minister position. Analysts suggest that the BJP's numerical advantage has given it significant influence over government decisions.

Political observers note that the timing of this potential defection is crucial. For nearly two years after the 2022 split, Shinde had not attempted further divisions within Thackeray's ranks. However, the 2024 assembly results, which strengthened the BJP's position, may have prompted Shinde to bolster his party's parliamentary strength. The recent rebellion by 20 Trinamool Congress MPs in West Bengal, who joined a smaller party, is seen as a catalyst for this move, demonstrating how quickly political equations can change.

A senior Shiv Sena (Shinde) leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the defection, if successful, would establish Shinde as a master strategist. The leader added that some had underestimated Shinde after the assembly elections, but this development would reaffirm his political acumen.

It is important to note that these reports remain unconfirmed, and the actual number of MPs switching sides may vary. The Shiv Sena (UBT) has not officially commented on the matter, and the full implications for the Mahayuti alliance and Maharashtra's political landscape will depend on the final outcome.
