PMO Reviews El Nino Threat, Orders Continuous Monitoring and State Coordination

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Tuesday directed that the impact of El Nino on the monsoon and vulnerable districts must be continuously monitored and assessed in coordination with state governments to enable timely remedial action.

The directions were issued during a high-level meeting chaired by P K Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. The meeting reviewed the progress of the kharif season and the possible impact of El Nino on other sectors of the economy.

Officials from more than 15 ministries, including Agriculture, Power, Cooperation, Health and Family Welfare, and Economic Affairs, attended the meeting. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) presented the overall rainfall situation up to July 7.

The PMO’s directive comes amid concerns that El Nino, a climate pattern associated with reduced monsoon rainfall, could affect crop yields and other sectors. The government has stressed the need for proactive measures to mitigate potential risks.
