PM SETU Scheme: 6 Tamil Nadu ITI Clusters to Get Major Upgrade – Tiruchi, Thanjavur Among Hubs
The Tamil Nadu government has identified six clusters of government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) for upgradation under the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme. This was disclosed by Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha in response to a query from Perambalur MP K. N. Arun Nehru.
The scheme aims to upgrade 1,000 government ITIs across the country using a hub-and-spoke model. Upgraded ITIs will feature smart classrooms, modern labs, digital content, and new courses aligned with industry needs.
The identified hubs in Tamil Nadu are Government ITIs in Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Hosur, Madurai, Thoothukudi, and Ambattur. Under the Tiruchi hub, the spokes include Government ITIs in Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Pullambadi (ITI for women), and Viralimalai. The Coimbatore hub covers Dharapuram, Gobichettipalayam, Coimbatore (Women), and Erode. The Madurai hub includes Dindigul, Theni, Karaikudi, and Paramakudi. The Hosur hub has Salem, Dharmapuri, Salem (women), and Mettur Dam. The Thoothukudi hub includes Tirunelveli, Tiruchendur, Nagercoil, and Virudhunagar. The Ambattur hub covers Chengalpattu, Perumbakkam, Vellore, and Ranipet.
The selection of ITIs under the PM-SETU scheme is done by respective state governments in consultation with industry and local industrial potential, the Minister said. Key objectives include improving training quality, modernising infrastructure and equipment, introducing industry-aligned courses, and strengthening industry linkages for demand-driven skilling.
