PM Modi: Yoga becomes world's largest community celebration on 12th International Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations in Kolkata, described yoga as the world's largest community celebration. Speaking at the iconic Red Road venue, Modi noted that June 21, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, is now globally recognised as a day dedicated to yoga.

"June 21, which marks the longest day on Earth, has now become the largest community celebration day because of yoga. Yoga brings people together. I congratulate the people of the world on this occasion," Modi said.

The Prime Minister emphasised this year's theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing", and highlighted yoga's benefits beyond physical exercise. "Yoga is not just physical exercise, not restricted to any age group; it is an expression of the human spirit," he stated. He encouraged participants to aim for greater flexibility at 40 than at 20, and more energy at 50 than at 60.

Modi underscored the ancient practice's role in promoting physical health, mental well-being, and active ageing, thereby improving quality of life. The event in Kolkata was part of global observances, with millions participating in yoga sessions across countries and cultures.

International Yoga Day was first proposed by Modi in 2014 and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with events held in nearly every country.
