PM Modi to Teachers: Look Beyond Marks, Curb Screen Time and Drug Abuse

On the eve of Teachers' Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met 82 National Award-winning teachers at his official residence and urged them to work towards reducing children's excessive screen time and preventing drug addiction among students. The educators, who came from school education, higher education and skill training, shared their innovative approaches with the Prime Minister during the interaction.

The awardees included 48 teachers from the Department of School Education and Literacy, 21 teachers and faculty members from higher educational institutions and polytechnics, and 13 skill trainers from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The National Awards for Teachers are conferred on teachers who have made notable contributions to education, including those in skill development. During the session, many awardees narrated stories of their personal and professional experiences, highlighting how they introduced creative methods to make classroom learning engaging and effective.

Modi said that teachers today need to look beyond the academic performance of children and be sensitive to their behaviour and everyday lives. He noted the decline of traditional joint families and told the teachers that they have become more important in the lives of children. In the absence of extended family members, teachers can provide guidance and act as mentors in crucial ways.

The Prime Minister also voiced concern over drug abuse among the younger generation. He cautioned that the problem often remains hidden, and therefore teachers should be observant. If they notice any changes in a student's behaviour that suggest drug use, they should act promptly. He said teachers can help children who are struggling with addiction and guide them towards a healthier path.

Another issue discussed was the excessive use of mobile phones and screens. PM Modi described this as a matter of concern. He suggested that teachers talk to parents about the duration for which students are using screens and whether mobile phones are being used late at night. He pointed out that children can gradually reduce screen time if they develop an interest in sports, physical activities and creative pursuits.

Addressing the gathering, Modi stressed the need to preserve childhood and nurture the natural curiosity of children. He maintained that teachers have a vital role in protecting the innocence of young children. By nurturing and guiding their inherent curiosity, teachers can make a significant contribution to their emotional and intellectual development.

PM Modi also referred to the National Education Policy and asked teachers to take children outside the confines of the classroom, connecting them with real-world skills and forms of work. He said the role of a teacher is not just to complete the syllabus but also to inculcate values such as dignity of labour. This, he said, will help students understand and respect all forms of honest work and prepare them for life beyond examinations.

The interaction at the Prime Minister's residence was part of an effort to recognise the contribution of exceptional teachers and give them an opportunity to share their ideas. This year, the award covered teachers from school education, higher education, and skill training, reflecting the full spectrum of the country's educational system.
