PM Modi Pays Tribute to Kargil Heroes on 27th Vijay Diwas: 'Gratitude to Brave Soldiers'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid homage to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War, marking the 27th Vijay Diwas. In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said, “Remembering the valour and sacrifice of our brave soldiers on Vijay Diwas. Our gratitude to them is unwavering.”
Vijay Diwas is observed annually on July 26 to commemorate India's victory over Pakistan in the Kargil conflict. The war, fought in the high-altitude region of Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir, saw Indian troops reclaim strategic positions that had been infiltrated by Pakistani soldiers and militants.
Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to the fallen heroes at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. “The courage and dedication of our armed forces continue to inspire every Indian,” he said.
The Kargil War, which lasted for over two months, resulted in the loss of more than 500 Indian soldiers. The conflict ended on July 26, 1999, with India successfully pushing back the intruders. Every year, the day is marked with ceremonies across the country to honour the bravery of the soldiers.
In his message, PM Modi reiterated the nation's commitment to the security and prosperity of the country, stating that the sacrifices of the soldiers will never be forgotten. The government has announced several welfare measures for the families of the martyrs, including financial assistance and educational support for their children.
The 27th Vijay Diwas comes amid heightened tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) in recent months. However, officials have assured that the Indian Army is fully prepared to defend the nation's borders.
Citizens across the country also participated in events to mark the day, including candlelight vigils and flag-hoisting ceremonies. Social media was flooded with messages of gratitude and remembrance for the Kargil heroes.
