PM Modi Pays Tribute to Former Qatar Emir, Calls Him ‘Visionary Leader’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep condolences on the passing of former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral ties between India and Qatar.
In a statement posted on social media, Modi said: “Deeply saddened to learn of the demise of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Emir of Qatar. He was a visionary leader who contributed immensely to the progress and development of Qatar and to the strengthening of India-Qatar relations. My heartfelt condolences to the royal family and the people of Qatar.”
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, was widely credited with modernising the country and transforming it into a major global player in energy and diplomacy. During his reign, he oversaw the development of Qatar’s vast natural gas reserves and hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup bid, which was won during his tenure.
Under his leadership, India-Qatar relations witnessed significant growth, with increased trade and investment ties. The bilateral relationship was further bolstered by visits of Indian leaders to Doha and Qatari officials to New Delhi.
Sheikh Hamad abdicated in favour of his son, the current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013. He remained a respected figure in regional and international affairs.
The Indian government declared a day of national mourning as a mark of respect, with the national flag flown at half-mast. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also conveyed condolences to his Qatari counterpart.
The passing of Sheikh Hamad marks the end of an era for Qatar and the Gulf region, leaving behind a legacy of modernisation and diplomacy.
