PM Modi opens Andhra Pradesh's new greenfield international airport at Bhogapuram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitharama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The new greenfield airport is expected to significantly improve air connectivity for the North Coastal region of the state.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, and Union Minister for Civil Aviation K. Ram Mohan Naidu. Officials from the GMR Group, which developed the airport under a public-private partnership, were also present.

The GMR Group briefed the Prime Minister on the airport's infrastructure, passenger amenities, and technological systems. They highlighted its design features, operational readiness, and anticipated role in promoting tourism, trade, and investment in the region.

The airport has been built at a cost of over Rs 5,640 crore under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. It is designed to handle 6 million passengers annually. The passenger terminal aims to provide a modern and efficient travel experience, incorporating advanced systems such as artificial intelligence, biometric processing, automated baggage handling, and intelligent monitoring solutions.

The project includes several sustainability measures, such as energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, a 5 MW solar power plant, rainwater harvesting, and electric vehicle charging points. The terminal is designed to meet green building standards and is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council.

The airport's architecture draws on Andhra Pradesh's cultural heritage, with a roof profile inspired by traditional Chuttilu cottages and the Araku Valley landscape. Its flowing form is meant to evoke a flying fish, blending regional elements with contemporary design.

Officials said the airport is expected to boost economic development, create employment opportunities, and strengthen air connectivity in Andhra Pradesh. It will also facilitate faster movement of passengers and cargo in the region.
