PM Modi launches 100-week Nasha Mukt Yuva campaign, says drug-free youth key to Viksit Bharat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (August 2, 2026) launched the 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan', a nationwide campaign aimed at preventing substance abuse among the youth. Addressing a virtual event, he said that a developed India requires young people who are physically and mentally fit, and that staying away from drugs is essential to that goal.

Mr. Modi said the campaign is not limited to the youth alone but is meant for their families, society, and the entire nation. He cautioned that drug addiction damages an individual's aspirations and can shatter families. "Drug use disturbs focus and takes you away from your dreams," he said.

The Prime Minister also asserted that the supply of drugs into India is part of a "terror plan" by "enemy nations" to harm the country's interests. He did not name any country or provide evidence to support the claim. The statement comes amid ongoing concerns over cross-border drug trafficking.

The launch was attended virtually by a large number of young people who described themselves as representatives of Gen-Z. It took place days after protests by students in Delhi and other cities demanded reforms in the public examination system. No direct link has been established between the two events.

The government said the campaign will run for 100 weeks as a 'Jan Bhagidari' (public participation) drive. Activities, including sports events, walkathons, meditation sessions, cultural programmes, awareness campaigns, street plays, discussion forums, art competitions, and community engagement programmes, will be organised every Sunday across the country.

“The next 100 Sundays will mark 100 strong steps towards a drug-free India,” Mr. Modi said.

The initiative expands upon the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan launched in 2020. Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Mansukh Mandaviya, who was present at the virtual event, said the new campaign is in line with the Prime Minister's vision of a drug-free India.

The campaign aims to inspire youth to become ambassadors of positive social change in their communities. According to officials, it will involve collaboration with state governments, educational institutions, and community organisations to ensure a wide reach. The programme will also focus on building awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse and encouraging public participation in creating a supportive environment.

Mr. Modi also stressed that families and communities play a crucial role in protecting the youth from drug abuse, and called upon parents and teachers to remain vigilant and supportive. The campaign's name, 'Sankalp', means a pledge, and the government has urged citizens to take a pledge against drug abuse as part of the initiative.

While the initiative has been announced with a focus on youth participation, its implementation will require sustained coordination among various government departments and civil society groups. No specific financial allocation or targets were announced at the launch.
