PM Modi Commissions Three Indigenous Naval Warships, Emphasises Maritime Strength

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday commissioned three indigenously built naval platforms—INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray—at a ceremony in Kolkata. The move underscores India's growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and its commitment to enhancing maritime security.

INS Dunagiri is a stealth frigate equipped with advanced weaponry and sensors, designed for anti-surface and anti-air warfare. INS Sanshodhak is a survey vessel that will aid in hydrographic mapping and navigational safety. INS Agray is a fast-attack craft capable of rapid deployment in coastal defence operations.

Speaking at the event, Modi stated that strong maritime capability is a decisive factor for a nation's economic and strategic influence. He highlighted that India has inducted over 40 indigenously built warships in recent years, reflecting the country's progress towards becoming a major global defence producer.

The commissioning is part of the government's 'Make in India' initiative, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign defence imports. The three ships were built at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and other Indian shipyards, involving domestic suppliers and labour.

Defence analysts note that the induction of these vessels strengthens the Indian Navy's operational readiness in the Indian Ocean region, where maritime security concerns have been rising due to piracy, illegal fishing, and strategic competition.
