Petrol bombs hurled at RSS office in Ranchi; police probe underway
Two unidentified individuals threw petrol bombs at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) office in Ranchi's Niwaranpur area in the early hours of Wednesday, June 17, 2026. No one was injured in the incident, which was captured on CCTV footage. The Jharkhand Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. No arrests have been disclosed so far.
The incident drew sharp reactions from leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who questioned the state's law and order situation. Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth visited the office and described the attack as serious, emphasising the need to uncover the entire conspiracy. "Police must find out the motive and intention behind the attack on the RSS office. This is not an ordinary incident," Seth told reporters. He called it an attack on "our mother," a reference to the RSS's symbolic role for its followers.
Jharkhand BJP president Aditya Sahu termed it a heinous crime and alleged that criminals in the state were emboldened. "The incident took place right under the administration's nose in the state capital—targeting the office of the Sangh, which is a centre of faith for millions and dedicated to national service—demonstrates that criminals have no fear of the police and are effectively running a parallel government," Sahu said. He demanded the arrest of the perpetrators within 24 hours and warned of an agitation if the police failed to act swiftly.
Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi called the incident extremely serious and concerning. He said an attack on the office of an ideological organisation like the RSS posed a challenge to law and order. "There is a need for a fair and swift investigation to uncover the full details and the motive behind the attack. Such acts cannot be tolerated under any circumstances," Marandi said. He also demanded a permanent police outpost near the RSS office to strengthen security.
According to the police, two persons threw bottles filled with petrol into the RSS office late on Tuesday night. The incident was recorded on CCTV cameras. Ranchi Superintendent of Police (City) Paras Rana, when contacted, declined to share details about any arrests, stating that the investigation was ongoing and updates would be provided through appropriate channels.
A possible motive being examined relates to a dispute with a nearby restaurant. RSS office-bearers had reportedly complained a few days earlier about garbage being scattered by the establishment. However, the police have not officially confirmed any motive behind the attack.
The incident has raised concerns about security in the state capital. The RSS, founded in 1925, is a voluntary organisation that focuses on social service and cultural activities, though it has also been at the centre of political debates. The BJP leaders' strong condemnation reflects the close ideological ties between the party and the Sangh.
As the investigation continues, the police have urged the public to maintain calm and refrain from speculation. The state government has not issued an official statement at the time of reporting.
