Personal feud behind bus assault in Tiruvannamalai; five arrested

In a case that highlights the risks faced by commuters on public transport, the Thanrampattu police in Tiruvannamalai district have arrested five people for allegedly attacking a passenger inside a government bus. The incident occurred a few days ago, and the arrests were made on Saturday after a coordinated investigation.

The accused have been identified as K. Ragu (28), C. Santhosh (26), R. Asaithambi (25), G. Madhavan (24), and N. Sukumar (21), all residents of Annandal village near Chengam. The victim, R. Sivasankar (27), also belongs to the same village. Preliminary inquiries suggest that Ragu, a mason, had an ongoing dispute with Sivasankar over the latter's friendship with Ragu's wife. The exact nature of the dispute and the events leading to the attack are part of the ongoing investigation, the police said.

The incident took place when Sivasankar boarded a state-owned bus bound for Tiruppur. As the bus was on its way, Ragu and Santhosh reportedly accosted Sivasankar and began attacking him. The other three accused were present, though their involvement is yet to be determined, according to the police. Passengers in the bus raised an alarm, and the driver pulled the vehicle to the side of the road. In the confusion that followed, all five accused managed to flee.

Sivasankar suffered serious injuries. He was assisted by fellow passengers and immediately taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai. Medical personnel later referred him to a hospital in Vellore for advanced care. The police did not disclose the current health status of the victim, but said that his statement would be recorded after he recovers.

A complaint was lodged at the Thanrampattu police station, and a case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The specific charges are expected to be finalised after a thorough examination of the evidence and medical reports.

The police formed a special team led by an inspector to trace the suspects. The probe involved the collection of CCTV footage from cameras installed along the bus route, including those at bus stops and nearby establishments. The team also obtained data from mobile tower locations, which helped in tracking the movement of the accused after the attack. Combined with inputs from confidential sources, the team zeroed in on a hideout in Annandal village.

On Saturday, the team raided the hideout and arrested all five persons. They were taken to the police station for questioning. After recording their statements, the police produced them before a judicial magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody. They have been lodged at the Central Prison in Vellore.

The police are now investigating whether there was any premeditation to cause grievous hurt or if the assault was spontaneous. They are also verifying the antecedents of the accused to see if any of them have prior criminal records. The mobile phones seized from them have been sent for forensic analysis, a process that may reveal more details about the conspiracy, if any.

This incident has raised questions about the adequacy of security measures in government buses, particularly on long-distance routes. Commuters often have little recourse if an attack occurs inside a moving vehicle. In this case, the quick action by the driver and passengers helped in getting the victim to medical aid. The police have appreciated their cooperation.
