Parliament Gridlocked Again as Opposition Refuses to Yield on NEET Leak and Police Action
Parliament witnessed a second consecutive day of disruption on Tuesday as Opposition parties continued to protest, demanding a discussion on the NEET paper leak and the police action against protesters in Delhi. Both Houses were adjourned without transacting any significant business.
Opposition leaders, including those from the Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and other parties, have maintained that they will not allow Parliament to function until their demands are addressed. A Congress MP stated on condition of anonymity, "We will discuss strategy on Wednesday morning, but it is highly unlikely that the House will function until the government accedes to our demands."
The NEET paper leak, which came to light earlier this year, has raised serious concerns about the integrity of competitive examinations. The Opposition has called for a thorough investigation and stringent action against those responsible. In addition, the police crackdown on protesters in Delhi, who were demonstrating against various issues including unemployment and inflation, has drawn criticism from Opposition parties, who accuse the government of suppressing dissent.
Union Ministers have not yet publicly responded to the Opposition's demands, but government sources indicate a willingness to discuss procedural matters while maintaining that the protests are political in nature. The standoff appears set to continue, with both sides digging in.
Political analysts note that such disruptions are not uncommon in the Indian Parliament, particularly during sessions when the Opposition seeks to highlight governance concerns. However, the current impasse over the NEET paper leak and the police action has struck a chord with the public, adding pressure on the government to respond.
As Parliament gears up for the third day, all eyes will be on the floor leaders' meeting scheduled for Wednesday morning. Whether the government will offer a discussion or the Opposition will soften its stance remains uncertain.
