Panchayat President Dies in Brick Attack Over Water Supply in Tamil Nadu
A village panchayat president in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district died after being allegedly struck with a brick during an argument over irregular drinking water supply, police said. The incident occurred in Kannanallur near Valliyur, where water distribution had reportedly been erratic for nearly a week.
The deceased has been identified as Maharajan, president of the Kannanallur panchayat council. The accused, Essaki Pandiyan, has been arrested and a criminal case has been registered, according to police. Preliminary reports say Pandiyan was frustrated over the water supply disruption and held Maharajan responsible for not resolving the issue. The argument between the two escalated, and Pandiyan allegedly hit Maharajan with a brick, causing severe injuries. Maharajan was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed.
A panchayat president is an elected head of a village council responsible for civic amenities such as drinking water supply, sanitation, and local infrastructure. Maharajan's death has shocked the local community, with many residents expressing grief over the loss of their elected representative.
The incident has also triggered a political dispute. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Member of Parliament Kanimozhi raised concerns over the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu and criticised the state government. In a post on X, she described Maharajan's death as shocking and claimed he was engaged in negotiations with residents protesting over the water issue when he was attacked.
Kanimozhi alleged that the government had created an environment where children, women, and elected representatives were not safe. She said, “The fact that the perpetrators were able to escape reveals that law and order have completely broken down in Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK government has created a situation where children, women, and people's representatives have no protection whatsoever.”
She demanded a thorough investigation into the murder and immediate action against all those responsible. Her statement referred to multiple perpetrators, although police have announced the arrest of one person. The state administration has not yet issued an official response to her allegations.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, with authorities collecting evidence and recording witness statements. They have not disclosed whether additional suspects are being sought.
The fatal attack has drawn attention to the wider problem of water scarcity in rural areas of Tirunelveli, where many villages depend on shared water supply networks and face interruptions, especially during peak summer months. Local residents continue to hope that the incident will prompt a lasting solution to the water crisis.
