Over 100 Police Personnel Injured, 70 Detained in Delhi Protest Turn Violent
More than 118 police personnel, including senior officers, were injured and around 70 protesters were detained on Monday after a protest march by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) turned violent in the New Delhi area, according to Delhi Police.
In a statement, Delhi Police accused the protesters of displaying 'unruly, aggressive and violent behaviour', including attacking security personnel, damaging government vehicles and public property. Police said that despite repeated warnings and lawful directions, the protesters refused to disperse and violated prohibitory orders.
The police statement added that protesters attacked personnel with stones and other objects, attempted to breach barricades, vandalised police and other government vehicles, and damaged public property, posing a threat to public order and safety.
The injured officials included officers from the ranks of Special Commissioner of Police down to Assistant Commissioner of Police, as well as women police personnel. Police also reported that around 60 protesters were injured in the scuffle.
According to police, around 15 to 20 government vehicles were vandalised. Approximately 70 protesters have been detained, and legal proceedings are underway. An FIR is being registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rioting, assault on public servants, and damage to public property.
Delhi Police reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, stating that strict action would be taken against those involved in unlawful activities.
