Oval to Host 2027 World Test Championship Final After Lord's Pitch Controversy

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) final will be held at The Oval in London from June 9 to 13. This will be the second time the venue hosts the marquee event, after the 2023 final where Australia defeated India by 209 runs.

The decision comes just over a month after the pitch for the first Test between England and New Zealand at Lord's was rated 'unsatisfactory' by the ICC. That pitch had been expected to host the 2025 WTC final, but the ICC's match referee, Andy Pycroft, noted excessive seam movement and uneven bounce, with 16 wickets falling on the first day and 17 on the second. Pycroft said the conditions provided an 'over-balance in favour of ball against bat'.

The ICC's decision to move the 2027 final to The Oval reflects the governing body's commitment to upholding pitch standards and ensuring a fair contest between bat and ball. The 2025 WTC final had already been scheduled at Lord's, but the pitch rating has raised questions about future assignments.

South Africa are the current WTC champions, having won the 2023-25 cycle final in 2025 against Australia. The 2027 final will mark the beginning of a new cycle.
