North Delhi School Van Driver, Helper Arrested for Sexually Assaulting Class 5 Student

A 11-year-old girl, a Class 5 student at a public school in North Delhi, was allegedly sexually assaulted by her school van driver and his helper, police confirmed on Wednesday. The two accused were arrested on Friday and booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

According to police sources, the incident came to light when the girl confided in her class teacher. She recounted that the driver would drop her near her home only after all other students had been dropped off. At that point, she alleged, the driver and his helper would sexually assault her.

The school administration was informed and subsequently filed a complaint with the local police. An investigation was launched, leading to the swift arrest of both individuals. They are currently in police custody and further legal proceedings are underway.

The POCSO Act provides for stringent punishment, including life imprisonment, for sexual offences against minors. It also mandates special procedures for recording the child's testimony and ensuring a child-friendly environment during the trial.

This incident has raised renewed concerns about the safety of children in school transport. Parents and activists have called for stricter background checks for drivers and helpers, as well as mandatory CCTV cameras in school vans. The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has taken suo motu cognisance of the case and is monitoring the investigation.

Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward. The girl is receiving counselling and support from school authorities and child welfare organisations.
