NLC India Renewables wins 900 MW solar project in Gujarat, boosting green energy push

NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited (NLCIL), has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) to develop a 900 MW solar power project in the state. The project was awarded through a tariff-based competitive bidding process, with GUVNL set to procure the generated power.

This development marks a significant step for NIRL, which was incorporated in 2023 with the mandate to acquire and manage the green energy projects and assets currently owned by NLCIL. The company has stated that this addition strengthens its renewable energy portfolio and reinforces its commitment to becoming a 10+ GW renewable energy company by 2030.

The award comes at a time when India is accelerating its transition to clean energy, with a national target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Gujarat, in particular, has emerged as a leader in solar power generation, leveraging its high solar insolation and supportive policy framework.

NLCIL, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, has traditionally been a lignite mining and thermal power generation company. In recent years, it has been diversifying into renewable energy to align with the country's climate commitments and reduce its carbon footprint. The establishment of NIRL as a dedicated renewable energy subsidiary underscores this strategic shift.

Industry experts view this project as a positive indicator of the growing participation of public sector enterprises in India's renewable energy landscape. The 900 MW capacity will contribute significantly to the state's solar power generation and help meet the rising electricity demand in a sustainable manner.

GUVNL, the nodal agency for power procurement in Gujarat, has been actively tendering large-scale renewable energy projects. This LoI to NIRL is part of a series of awards aimed at expanding the state's clean energy capacity.

While specific financial details and the expected timeline for commissioning have not been disclosed, the project is likely to involve substantial investment and create employment opportunities during the construction and operational phases.
