Nitin Gadkari to sue Meta, X, Google over deepfake videos on fuel policy

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has been granted permission by the Bombay High Court to file a civil suit against Meta Platforms, X Corp, and Google LLC, among others, over allegedly defamatory AI-generated deepfake videos and manipulated digital content related to the ethanol-blended fuel controversy.

The suit seeks the removal of content that Gadkari claims falsely associates him with the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme and the E20 initiative. According to the plea, both programmes are administered exclusively by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Gadkari has no role in either.

Justice Abhay Ahuja allowed Gadkari, represented by advocate Sandeep S. Ladda, to institute the suit in the Bombay High Court. The court will hear his application for interim relief, including a temporary injunction, at a later date.

The case highlights the growing concern over deepfake technology and its potential to spread misinformation about public figures. The court's decision to allow the suit marks a significant step in addressing legal recourse against AI-generated defamatory content.
