NHAI Launches Digital Local Pass for Residents Near Toll Plazas via Rajmargyatra App
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a digital 'local pass' for residents living within a 20-kilometre radius of toll plazas. Available on the Rajmargyatra app, the pass aims to simplify toll payments for frequent local travellers.
Earlier, commuters had to physically visit toll plazas and submit supporting documents to prove their eligibility for local exemptions. Now, the process is entirely digital. The pass is part of NHAI's push towards a barrier-less tolling system, which eliminates the need for vehicles to stop at toll booths.
The eligibility for the local pass will be automatically verified using VAHAN database details, including the commuter's address, vehicle number, and linked FASTag. This move follows the rollout of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at several plazas across the country.
The India Express had earlier reported on June 17 that the government planned to introduce such a facility by July. The new digital pass is expected to benefit thousands of residents who frequently travel through toll plazas within their local area.
By leveraging existing data, NHAI aims to reduce congestion at toll plazas and provide a seamless travel experience. The Rajmargyatra app, already used for real-time highway information, now serves as a one-stop platform for toll-related services.
