New life for 105 Andhra ponds: ₹50 crore PMKSY makeover boosts groundwater
In a significant push for water conservation, the Andhra Pradesh government has completed the beautification and modernisation of 26 village ponds across the State under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), with works on the remaining ponds progressing steadily. The project, costing ₹50 crore, covers 105 ponds and is being implemented under the direct guidance of Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Environment & Forests K. Pawan Kalyan.
An official release said the initiative has not only helped in increasing groundwater levels but also transformed the surroundings into community-friendly spaces. Walking tracks have been laid, open-air gymnasiums set up, and children’s parks developed as part of a comprehensive plan to make the most of these water bodies. These additions are expected to provide a serene atmosphere for local residents while ensuring the ponds remain functional irrigation resources.
The PMKSY, a centrally sponsored scheme, has given new momentum to the much-needed rejuvenation of freshwater ponds and lakes in the State. The government said it is committed to shaping these water bodies into efficient irrigation resources and systems that protect the ecological balance.
According to the release, 26 ponds have already been beautified in Anantapur, Palnadu, Sri Sathya Sai, Chittoor, Kurnool, Nellore, Kakinada, and Guntur districts. The remaining works are in various stages of completion. As part of the scheme, strengthening of pond bunds, construction of entry gates, and installation of solar lights have been undertaken.
Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has directed officials to pay special attention to the quality of works and complete all pending works by the end of September. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the continuous assistance and cooperation provided to the State through Centrally Sponsored Schemes, and to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for his cooperation in the implementation of the project.
The revival of village ponds is seen as a critical step for drought-prone districts in Andhra Pradesh, where groundwater recharge is vital for agriculture and daily needs. By integrating modern amenities with traditional water structures, the State aims to promote both environmental sustainability and community well-being.
Local residents have welcomed the move, noting that the cleaned and beautified ponds have become recreational spots, encouraging daily visits and fostering a sense of community ownership. Officials say the solar lighting and security features have also made the areas safer for evening use.
The PMKSY, launched by the Government of India, focuses on ensuring access to irrigation for every farm and improving water use efficiency. Andhra Pradesh's targeted use of the scheme for pond rejuvenation aligns with the national objective of ‘more crop per drop’ while also addressing ecological concerns.
With a deadline set for September end, the State administration is working to ensure that all 105 ponds are fully modernised and ready to serve both irrigation and community needs. The completion of these works is expected to provide a model for other States to follow in the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
