New Education Minister Pralhad Joshi: 'Education is a new subject for me'
New Delhi: Pralhad Joshi, a senior BJP leader from Karnataka, officially assumed charge as the Union Minister of Education on Monday, expressing humility about his new portfolio. 'This is a new subject for me,' Joshi said after taking over from Dharmendra Pradhan, who was moved to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in the recent cabinet reshuffle.
Joshi, who previously held the portfolios of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, and Mines, acknowledged the challenges ahead in steering India's education sector. 'I am aware of the expectations and the responsibilities. I will work closely with stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the National Education Policy 2020,' he stated.
The change in leadership comes at a critical time as the Ministry of Education oversees the rollout of the NEP 2020, which aims to overhaul the country's educational framework from school to higher education. Key priorities include increasing access to quality education, enhancing digital learning infrastructure, and bridging the rural-urban divide.
Joshi, a four-time Lok Sabha member from Dharwad, brings extensive administrative experience but lacks a direct background in education. However, his supporters highlight his track record in managing multiple ministries and his ability to build consensus. 'He is a seasoned politician who understands the grassroots. His experience in parliamentary affairs will help in navigating policy changes,' said a senior ministry official on condition of anonymity.
Opposition parties have expressed cautious optimism while urging the new minister to address pressing issues such as teacher vacancies, rising textbook costs, and the impact of the pandemic on learning outcomes. Congress spokesperson Pramod Tiwari said, 'We hope Mr. Joshi prioritises the interests of students and teachers over political ideology.'
The education sector has seen significant changes under the previous minister, including the launch of the National Research Foundation and reforms in higher education regulations. Joshi is expected to continue these efforts while addressing criticisms about the pace of implementation. He also faces the task of improving India's performance in global education indices.
In his first address to ministry staff, Joshi emphasised teamwork and innovation. 'Let us work together to make India a global knowledge hub,' he said. The minister is scheduled to meet with state education ministers next week to discuss collaborative measures.
Analysts note that Joshi's appointment signals the government's focus on continuity. 'He is a loyal party worker who will carry forward the agenda without friction,' said political analyst Neerja Chowdhury. However, some observers question whether a non-specialist can effectively manage a complex portfolio like education.
As Joshi settles into his new role, the nation watches to see how he balances the demands of reform with the ground realities of India's diverse education landscape.
