Nepal Floods: Kathmandu Asks India, China for Bailey Bridges as Toll Crosses 580
Kathmandu, August 29: Nepal has formally requested India and China to provide Bailey bridges to restore connectivity in regions devastated by flash floods and landslides that have killed hundreds and left thousands missing. The request was confirmed by Nepal's Foreign Minister, who told Reuters that the country requires specialised technical assistance in areas where it lacks expertise following the disaster.
The catastrophic flooding, triggered by a glacial collapse in the Himalayas, has swept through villages, destroying roads, bridges, and communication lines. Bailey bridges—portable, pre-fabricated truss bridges—are critical for enabling rescue teams and relief supplies to reach isolated communities. The appeal to its two neighbours underscores the scale of the destruction and the urgent need for logistical support.
The disaster, described as the deadliest for Nepal since the 2015 earthquake, has claimed at least 586 lives, according to emergency teams. The number of missing has soared past 2,400, with Nepal's disaster authority adding 933 hydropower workers to the list, which already includes trekkers and pilgrims returning from Tibet's sacred Mount Kailash. Some bodies have been swept downstream as far as India, highlighting the transboundary nature of the catastrophe.
Rescuers from Nepal and China are continuing their search for survivors, though hopes are fading. The US Geological Survey attributed the disaster to a glacial collapse that unleashed a massive flow of icy debris, creating a tsunami-like wall of water and mud that engulfed entire settlements. Climate scientists have long warned that rising global temperatures are increasing the risk of such glacial lake outburst floods in the Himalayan region.
The floods have also raised questions about regional cooperation on disaster management and climate adaptation. While Nepal has accepted aid from India and China, officials stress the need for long-term investments in early warning systems and resilient infrastructure. The request for Bailey bridges is seen as a first step toward rebuilding, but the road to recovery will be long and arduous.
As the nation mourns, the international community has pledged support. However, aid workers on the ground say the immediate priority remains locating the missing and providing shelter, food, and medical care to survivors. The disaster serves as a grim reminder of the cascading impacts of climate change in the world's most fragile mountain ecosystems.
