Nellore to distribute 10,000 bicycles to poor girl students on July 27
Nellore district is preparing to distribute 10,000 bicycles to girl students from economically disadvantaged families studying in 23 government-run high schools in the Nellore Assembly constituency. The distribution is scheduled for July 27.
The bicycles are being provided by Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ponguru Narayana from his personal funds, at a cost of approximately ₹6 crore. According to the Minister, the initiative aims to reduce the travel burden on students, some of whom had to walk up to 40 minutes to reach school.
Of the total bicycles, 7,000 are currently stored at Venkatagiri Rajah (VR) High School in Nellore, where the distribution function will take place. The remaining 3,000 bicycles are to be distributed by the Sankranti festival.
VR High School holds significance for Mr. Narayana as his alma mater. Last year, he had the school's infrastructure upgraded using his own funds, and the modernised campus was inaugurated by Education Minister Nara Lokesh.
On Sunday, Mr. Narayana’s daughter and Narayana Education Group director Ponguru Sharani visited the campus to inspect the arrangements. She interacted with students and teachers and spoke about her father’s plan to introduce free IIT foundation and Olympiad coaching at the school. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Y.O. Nandan accompanied her during the visit.
