NEET protest in Bengaluru sees FIR over posters; political parties clash
BENGALURU: A protest over the alleged NEET question paper leak at Bengaluru's Freedom Park has taken a political turn after police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against an unidentified woman for displaying posters that were deemed provocative. The protest, held on July 24, drew around 1,000 to 1,500 students and members of various organisations, demanding transparency and accountability in the examination process.
According to the FIR filed by Police Sub-Inspector Sulochana of Upparpet Police Station, personnel were deployed at the venue from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. to maintain order during the protest organised under the leadership of Arun Kumar, Karnataka State President of the All India Students' Federation (AISF). Around 5 p.m., a young woman allegedly displayed posters bearing messages referring to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam—both accused in the 2020 North-East Delhi riots case. One poster also reportedly carried a derogatory slogan against the Bengaluru police. Police seized the posters immediately, stating that the content could provoke the public and disturb communal harmony and public order. The woman left the venue before her identity could be established.
The police have registered a case under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which penalises wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause a riot. Authorities are analysing CCTV footage, photographs, and other evidence to identify the individual involved.
The incident sparked political reactions. Karnataka BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra accused the Congress government and the Home Department of failing to act against what he termed “anti-national activities” during the protest. He demanded strict action against those responsible. In response, Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge stated that the police had acted promptly by registering an FIR and initiating an investigation. He commended the Bengaluru Police for managing the protest peacefully without resorting to force while ensuring law and order was maintained.
The investigation is ongoing, and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.
