NEET Paper Leak: Delhi Court Takes Cognisance of CBI Chargesheet Against 13 Accused

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday (August 12, 2026) took cognisance of the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) chargesheet in the NEET paper leak case, formally accepting the final report against 13 accused individuals. Special Judge Ajay Gupta, presiding over the designated fast-track court for cases involving paper leaks and unfair means in public examinations, acknowledged the agency’s findings.

The court is likely to begin hearings on framing of charges from Thursday (August 13, 2026). This development marks a significant step in the legal proceedings surrounding the alleged leak of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper, which was scheduled to be held this year.

During the proceedings, the CBI informed the court that some witnesses whose names have been published in the media could be minors, and that portions of the chargesheet have been continuously printed in newspapers. The court expressed displeasure over such media coverage, stating, “This is very shocking… Whatever has not yet been stated in court and is currently part of the chargesheet… All of that being made public in the media is extremely shocking.”

The judge emphasised that a responsible media should refrain from publishing such details, particularly when the case involves witnesses who may require protection. The remarks underscore the need to balance press freedom with the right to a fair trial and the safety of those involved in the judicial process.

The CBI’s chargesheet, submitted to the designated fast-track court, outlines the alleged roles of the accused in the conspiracy to leak the question paper. The investigation has reportedly uncovered a network of individuals who allegedly accessed and distributed the paper before the examination. The Enforcement Directorate has also been probing possible money laundering linked to the case.

NEET is a nationwide entrance examination for admission to undergraduate medical courses. The integrity of the exam is crucial for ensuring merit-based selection.
