Nation Honours Kargil War Heroes on 26th Vijay Diwas; President, PM Lead Tributes
On the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, India remembered the valour and sacrifice of its soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the nation in paying tributes to the martyrs at the National War Memorial in New Delhi on Sunday.
The Kargil War, which took place between May and July 1999, saw Indian forces successfully repel Pakistani intruders from strategic positions in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. The conflict resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, but India's victory is celebrated annually as Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26 July.
Prime Minister Modi, in a post on social media platform X, expressed the nation's gratitude. 'On Kargil Vijay Diwas, our nation expresses gratitude to the brave soldiers for their extraordinary courage and commitment towards securing India. Their valour in the face of the most formidable conditions will forever remain a source of national pride,' he wrote.
President Murmu also paid homage, stating that the courage and sacrifice of the armed forces inspire every citizen. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid a wreath at the National War Memorial and observed a moment of silence in honour of the fallen heroes.
The ceremony was attended by senior military officials, veterans, and families of the martyrs. The event underscored the nation's unwavering commitment to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India, in line with constitutional values.
