Namma Metro Yellow Line gets full 15-train fleet, peak-hour frequency down to 6 minutes
Bengaluru's Namma Metro has completed the induction of all 15 trainsets for the Yellow Line, a move that is set to improve service reliability and reduce waiting times for passengers on the 19.75-km corridor connecting R.V. Road and Bommasandra.
The final six-coach trainset, supplied by Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. (TRSL), was formally inducted into service on Saturday after arriving at the Hebbagodi depot in late July. The train underwent mandatory tests and inspections before being cleared for operations.
With the full fleet now in place, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has increased peak-hour frequency to one train every six minutes. Earlier, the corridor operated with a limited number of trains, leading to longer waits and occasional overcrowding.
A BMRCL official said the availability of the complete fleet would enhance the reliability of services and help meet the growing passenger demand on the Yellow Line. According to the official, 13 of the 15 trainsets will be deployed for regular passenger operations, while the remaining two will be kept as reserve stock.
“The reserve trains will be used to ensure uninterrupted services during scheduled maintenance, emergencies and unforeseen technical issues,” the official added.
The Yellow Line, which was inaugurated nearly a year ago, is a key link for commuters travelling between the southern parts of Bengaluru and the industrial and IT hubs along Hosur Road. The corridor passes through major areas such as Jayadeva Hospital, Banashankari, and Silk Institute, and provides last-mile connectivity to several bus terminals and upcoming residential layouts.
The completion of the TRSL order marks a significant milestone for the project. The company has now delivered all 15 trainsets for the Yellow Line, each consisting of six coaches with modern amenities such as automatic doors, LED lighting, and GPS-based passenger information systems.
With the Yellow Line order finished, TRSL will now focus on manufacturing and supplying 18 additional trainsets for Namma Metro's Purple and Green lines under a separate contract. These trains are expected to further augment the capacity of the city's metro network, which has seen a steady rise in ridership since the opening of new sections in recent years.
BMRCL has been expanding its network across Bengaluru, with several new corridors under construction. The completion of the Yellow Line fleet is part of a broader effort to improve frequency and reduce congestion on existing routes. The corporation has also been working on integrating metro services with other modes of public transport to offer seamless travel to commuters.
Passengers have welcomed the improved frequency, noting that the reduced waiting time will make daily travel more convenient. “Earlier, we had to wait for eight to nine minutes during rush hour. Now, with six-minute intervals, it feels much quicker,” said a regular commuter on the Yellow Line.
The Namma Metro network now spans over 70 kilometres, with more than 60 stations. Once the under-construction phases are completed, the network is expected to exceed 100 kilometres, providing a robust public transport backbone for the rapidly growing city.
