Nagaland's Dimapur-Kohima Rail Link 41% Complete, Set to Transform Connectivity by 2029

The Dimapur-Kohima new railway line project, a key infrastructure initiative in Nagaland, has reached 41 per cent physical progress and is on track for completion by 2029, according to officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, confirmed that the 88-km line between Dhansiri in Dimapur and Zubza near Kohima is progressing as planned. Once operational, it will provide the first direct rail connectivity to the state capital, Kohima, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing accessibility.

The project falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway zone. Sharma noted that the railway line is expected to boost socio-economic development in Nagaland and the wider Northeastern region by improving access to education, healthcare, tourism, and markets. It will also facilitate smoother freight movement, which is crucial for local industries and trade.

Currently, the nearest railway station to Kohima is at Dimapur, about 74 km away. The new line will connect Kohima directly to the national rail network, thereby integrating the state more closely with the rest of India. The project is part of the central government's focus on enhancing connectivity in the Northeast, a region that has historically faced infrastructural challenges.

Despite the challenging terrain, which includes hilly and forested areas, construction has advanced steadily. The NFR has employed modern engineering techniques to overcome geological hurdles. Environmental and social impact assessments have been carried out to minimise disruption to local communities and ecosystems.

The completion of the Dimapur-Kohima line is expected to spur tourism in Nagaland, known for its Hornbill Festival and diverse tribal cultures. It will also facilitate quicker movement of troops and supplies for defence purposes, given the state's proximity to international borders.

Local residents and business owners have expressed optimism about the project. However, some concerns remain regarding land acquisition and timely compensation for affected families. The NFR has assured that rehabilitation and resettlement procedures are being followed as per government norms.

The 2029 deadline, though ambitious, reflects the government's commitment to completing this strategic link. With 41 per cent of the work already done, the project is well within its planned schedule. Regular monitoring and coordination with state authorities aim to prevent delays.

Once fully operational, the Dimapur-Kohima railway line will mark a milestone in Nagaland's infrastructure development, fostering greater integration and economic growth in the Northeast.
