Nagaland Landslides: 8 Dead, Rescue Operations Underway in Mon District
At least eight people have been killed and several others injured in multiple landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Nagaland's Mon district on Sunday, officials said.
The landslides occurred around 6:30 am, with the bodies of four victims recovered on Sunday, while four more remained buried under debris as of Sunday evening. Search and rescue operations are being conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and local communities.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed condolences, stating, 'Deeply distressing reports of heavy landslides in Mon. My heartfelt condolences to those who've lost loved ones. The state government is closely monitoring the situation.' He confirmed that multiple agencies are working on the ground for search and rescue.
In addition to the landslides, district administrations reported widespread waterlogging in Mon town and Tizit, disrupting normal life due to incessant rainfall. The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in the region over the next 24 hours, raising concerns of further landslides.
The monsoon season in Northeast India typically brings heavy rainfall, often leading to landslides and flooding. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines. Relief camps have been set up for those displaced.
The state government has announced an ex gratia of ₹4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The injured are being treated at local hospitals, with medical teams deployed to the affected areas.
