Myanmar's Suu Kyi appears in good health in first Red Cross meeting in years

Detained Myanmar leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has met with a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), marking her first confirmed outside contact in two and a half years. The visit, which took place recently, was confirmed by the military government, which released photographs of the meeting.

In the photographs, the 81-year-old appears healthy and relaxed, though no official details about her medical condition or the content of the discussions were provided. The ICRC confirmed the visit in a brief statement, stating that it included an opportunity to speak with Suu Kyi in private, in accordance with the organisation's standards for visiting people deprived of liberty.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was detained in February 2021 after the armed forces seized power from her elected government. She was subsequently sentenced to 33 years in prison on charges that international observers have widely criticised as politically motivated. Her sentence has been reduced since then, and she has been moved from prison to house arrest.

Until this visit, the military authorities had repeatedly assured the public that Suu Kyi was safe, but had provided no verifiable evidence of her well-being. Her son, Kim Aris, had been campaigning internationally in recent months for proof of life.

Kim Aris welcomed the news of the ICRC meeting, calling it the first positive development for his mother in more than five years. In a social media post, he said, “This may be a first step, but it must not be the last.”

The ICRC delegation was led by its representative Arnaud de Baecque. The organisation did not disclose any details about Suu Kyi's health or the subjects discussed during the private conversation.

The meeting is being seen as a rare instance of outside access to Suu Kyi, who has been largely isolated since her detention. It remains unclear whether this will lead to further visits or greater transparency about her situation.

The military government has not commented further on the visit. International observers and human rights groups have repeatedly called for Suu Kyi's release and for unimpeded access to her by independent bodies.
