Mumbai Tree Collapse Kills 63-Year-Old Man Amid Heavy Monsoon

A 63-year-old man died on Sunday afternoon after a tree collapsed on him in the Naupada area of Kurla, Mumbai. The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 pm during heavy monsoon rains that have been affecting the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) identified the victim as Yunush Kundawala. According to officials, he was standing next to a roadside shop when the tree suddenly uprooted and fell onto the structure, trapping him underneath. Local residents and emergency responders managed to extricate him, but he was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

A video of the incident circulated on social media showed a crowded street at the time of the collapse. While Kundawala was fatally trapped, several other pedestrians narrowly escaped injury.

This incident highlights the recurring dangers posed by aging trees and inadequate maintenance during Mumbai's monsoon season. The city has witnessed multiple tree collapses in recent years, often resulting in casualties. The BMC has undertaken tree audits and pruning drives, but critics argue that implementation remains inconsistent.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution during heavy rainfall and to report vulnerable trees to the civic body. The monsoon season in Mumbai typically lasts from June to September, bringing frequent heavy downpours and associated hazards such as waterlogging, building collapses, and tree falls.
