Mumbai Schools, Colleges Declare Afternoon Holiday as Red Alert for Rain Issued

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the afternoon shift on Saturday, July 4, 2026, following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy rain.

In a civic bulletin released at noon, the BMC stated that the decision was made in the interest of student safety amid the severe weather conditions. The corporation has also urged residents to step out of their homes only if absolutely necessary.

The red alert, issued by the IMD, indicates the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding areas, raising concerns about waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and potential hazards for commuters.

On Friday night, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) similarly declared a holiday for all primary, middle, and high schools, as well as anganwadis, in Thane district for Saturday, citing the same weather warning.

Authorities are advising the public to stay indoors, avoid low-lying areas, and follow safety guidelines as the city braces for continued heavy downpours.
