Mumbai Police Files FIR Against Shivaji Park Protest Organisers Over Unlawful Assembly
The Mumbai Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the organisers of a protest held at Shivaji Park on Sunday, citing unlawful assembly. According to a senior police officer, no permission was granted for the demonstration, which was attended by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray.
“While the protest was carried out at Shivaji Park, no permission had been granted for the same. In spite of that, since they went ahead with it, an FIR has been registered against the organisers of the protest,” the officer said.
The protest was part of a series of demonstrations related to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) issue, though the exact trigger for this particular protest remains unclear. Separately, a similar protest planned at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar on Monday was also denied permission by the authorities.
The police action has drawn attention to the legal requirements for public assemblies in Mumbai, where organisers must obtain prior permission from the local authorities. Failure to do so can result in legal action, including charges of unlawful assembly under the Indian Penal Code.
The FIR details the names of the organisers, but further particulars about the charges or the number of participants have not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
