Mumbai Landslide: Two Dead, Several Trapped in Kurla Chawl Collapse
A landslide struck the Kurla area of Mumbai's eastern suburb in the early hours of Wednesday, August 12, 2026, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving several others trapped under the debris. The incident occurred at approximately 3:48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical in Kurla West.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) classified the event as a Level II incident. Rescue operations were promptly initiated by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and BMC personnel. As per BMC officials, about 50 BMC staff and NDRF teams are working at the site to locate and extricate those trapped.
The deceased have been identified as Sohel Ansari (18) and Mohamad Ansari (14). Both were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. According to Dr. Vishal, the Chief Medical Officer, Mohamad was declared brought dead, while Sohel sustained severe head injuries and succumbed to them later.
A BMC official stated, "Debris fell on nearby rooms of the chawl structure. As per witnesses, six to eight persons were trapped under the debris." One person is also reported to be injured, though further details of their condition are awaited.
The rescue operation involves two divisional fire officers (DFO), an assistant divisional fire officer (ADFO), two senior station officers (SrSO), four station officers, four fire engines, two fire tenders, two rescue vehicles, two mobile water tankers, and one water quick response vehicle. BMC Mayor Ritu Tawade also visited the spot to oversee the operations.
Landslides and structural collapses are recurring risks in Mumbai during the monsoon season, when heavy rains weaken soil and old structures. The authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious. Further details are awaited as the rescue efforts continue.
