Mumbai Faces Heavy Rainfall; IMD Issues Orange Alert for City and Neighbouring Districts
Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, following an intense overnight downpour. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for the city and neighbouring districts, including Thane, Raigad, and Palghar.
According to IMD, moderate to intense spells of rain are forecast for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg. The city recorded 195 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on June 24, with the eastern suburbs receiving 167 mm and the western suburbs 208 mm.
The southwest monsoon arrived in Mumbai on June 23, 2026, after a delay of 13 days, bringing heavy rainfall to the region. The IMD reported that the monsoon has advanced into the central Arabian Sea, causing rainfall in several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, as well as in Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
The heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging at several locations across Mumbai, including the subway in Everard Nagar and near the Saki Naka Metro station. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a retaining wall near a residential building in Vikhroli West collapsed late on Tuesday night. Additionally, a tree fell on a car in Dadar.
