Mullaperiyar Dam Water Level at 112.65 Feet, Well Below Danger Mark

The water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam, a key reservoir shared between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, stood at 112.65 feet on Sunday, significantly below the maximum permissible level of 142 feet. The dam, which is operated by Tamil Nadu but located in Kerala's Idukki district, received an inflow of 172 cubic feet per second (cusecs) and discharged 256 cusecs, according to official data.

Meanwhile, the Vaigai Dam in Tamil Nadu recorded a water level of 33.99 feet, against a maximum of 71 feet, with an inflow of 64 cusecs and a discharge of 86 cusecs. No rainfall was reported in the catchment areas in the 24 hours ending 6 a.m. on Sunday.

The Mullaperiyar Dam, built in 1895, has been a subject of long-standing dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu over safety concerns and water sharing. Kerala has argued for a new dam, citing seismic vulnerability, while Tamil Nadu insists the existing structure is safe. The current water levels remain within the operational norms, and authorities continue to monitor the situation.

The water levels are crucial for irrigation and drinking water supply in Tamil Nadu's districts of Theni, Madurai, and Ramanathapuram, while Kerala's concerns focus on the safety of the dam and its impact on the downstream population.
