Mullaperiyar Dam Water Level at 112.20 Feet, Well Within Safe Limits
The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam, located in Kerala's Idukki district and operated by Tamil Nadu, stood at 112.20 feet on Sunday. This is significantly below the maximum permissible level of 142 feet, indicating no immediate cause for concern.
The dam recorded an inflow of 81 cubic feet per second (cusecs) and a discharge of 256 cusecs. In comparison, the Vaigai dam in Tamil Nadu recorded a water level of 33.89 feet, well below its maximum capacity of 71 feet, with an inflow of 99 cusecs and a discharge of 86 cusecs.
The combined storage in the Periyar credit stood at 1,747.72 million cubic feet (mcft). Rainfall recorded in the region included 4.2 mm in Pullipatti, 1.6 mm in Kallandiri, and 0.6 mm in Gudalur.
The Mullaperiyar dam, built in 1895, is a subject of ongoing discussions between the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu over safety and water-sharing. Regular monitoring of water levels is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department to ensure the dam operates within safe parameters.
