MP High Court Reduces Life Sentence to 7 Years for Husband Who Killed Wife Over Insulting Remark

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has reduced a man's life sentence to seven years in a 2021 murder case, ruling that his wife's remark that she could 'keep a thousand husbands' constituted grave and sudden provocation.

A Division Bench of Justices Vivek Agarwal and Avanindra Kumar Singh observed that the wife's comment was an indirect attack on her husband's worth and dignity, capable of depriving a person of self-control. The court, however, upheld the finding that the husband was responsible for his wife's death.

The incident occurred in Chhindwara district in 2021. The husband was originally sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder. The High Court modified the sentence after considering the provocation factor.

The Bench stated: 'When a wife refers to her husband that she can keep a thousand husbands like him, it is an indirect reference to the worthlessness of the husband, meaning he has no value as a human being or a husband. Therefore, it can be termed as a sudden and grave provocation.'
