MP Brijesh Chowta Urges Industrialists to Utilise Plots in Mangaluru Plastic Park
Member of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada, Captain Brijesh Chowta, on Wednesday visited the Plastic Park site in Ganjimutt on the outskirts of Mangaluru. Following the visit, he issued a statement urging industrialists to make optimal use of the plots that will soon be allotted in the park.
The Plastic Park project, envisioned to boost economic activity in coastal Karnataka, was originally initiated by the late Union Minister Ananth Kumar. However, the project faced prolonged delays due to legal complications in acquiring 9.33 acres out of the total 104 acres designated for the park.
According to the MP's statement, these legal hurdles stalled progress for a significant period. To resolve the impasse, Captain Chowta wrote to the chief engineer of the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), requesting that the disputed land be excluded and a revised project scheme be prepared using the available land.
Following this intervention, the revised design for the administration building of the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) was approved in November 2024, and construction commenced thereafter. CIPET, an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, will provide technology support and training facilities within the park.
Major legal obstacles were cleared by October 2025, paving the way for the project to move forward. In April 2026, KIADB issued the notification to begin the process of plot allotment, the MP stated. Captain Chowta conducted a detailed review of essential infrastructure at the site, including road connectivity, electricity supply, and water facilities. He directed KIADB officials to complete all pending works and ensure that commercial operations in the park commence at the earliest.
The MP emphasised that the Plastic Park would play a crucial role in the economic development of the coastal Karnataka region and create substantial employment opportunities for the youth. He appealed to industrialists to make good use of the upcoming plots and collaborate with the government in the region's development.
Mangaluru City North MLA Y. Bharath Shetty accompanied the MP during the site visit. The park is expected to provide a dedicated ecosystem for plastic-based industries, enhancing the industrial profile of the region. Its proximity to the New Mangalore Port offers logistical advantages for import of raw materials and export of finished products, potentially attracting investments from across the country and abroad.
