Monsoon rains trigger landslide, house collapse in Kodagu; no casualties

Kodagu district in Karnataka received heavy rainfall on July 31 and August 1, triggering a landslide and causing a house collapse. The district administration confirmed that no casualties were reported in either incident.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Madikeri and Somwarpet taluks received heavy rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. on August 1. Madikeri recorded 86.08 mm of rainfall, while Somwarpet received 93.9 mm. The district as a whole recorded an average of 56.79 mm of rainfall during the same period.

The heavy rain caused a landslide at 2nd Monnangeri village, disrupting traffic on the road leading to the village. Officials said the road has been cleared and traffic is being restored.

In Madikeri town, roads in Spatika Layout were inundated after drains overflowed following incessant rain. A portion of a house in the locality collapsed due to the continuous downpour. No one was injured in the incident, as the occupants had moved to a safer place earlier.

In response to the weather forecast of heavy rainfall in south Karnataka, the Kodagu district administration had declared a holiday for schools and anganwadi centres in Somwarpet taluk on August 1. Precautionary measures were also taken in other taluks, with authorities keeping relief teams ready.

Kodagu, a hilly district in the Western Ghats, is prone to landslides and flash floods during the monsoon season. The region has witnessed several such incidents in the past, prompting the district administration to issue alerts and evacuation advisories when heavy rainfall is predicted.

Revenue officials are conducting assessment of the damage and will submit a report to the district administration. The public has been advised to stay away from vulnerable areas and follow official guidelines during the ongoing monsoon.
