Modi: BRICS Must Lead Fight Against Terrorism, Cyber Threats

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the BRICS grouping can play a vital role in tackling terrorism, cyber security, and other common challenges. Speaking at a meeting of National Security Advisers of BRICS member-countries in New Delhi, Mr. Modi highlighted that India's leadership of the grouping will help enhance the priorities of the Global South.

“In a challenging global landscape, BRICS has a vital role in deepening security cooperation and addressing shared challenges, from terrorism and cyber security to emerging technologies. India's chairmanship will seek to advance practical cooperation, support the priorities of the Global South, and contribute to a safer, more secure and inclusive world,” Mr. Modi said.

The two-day meeting, which began on June 22, brought together delegates from BRICS nations to discuss energy and food security, supply chain disruptions, emerging technologies used by terrorist networks, cyber security, and climate-induced instability. The delegations expressed full support for India's BRICS chairship in 2026 under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.

On the sidelines of the meeting, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with his Russian counterpart, Secretary of the Security Council Sergei Shoigu, to review ongoing bilateral projects.

The meeting also witnessed tense exchanges between delegates from Iran and the United Arab Emirates over the conflict in the Gulf. Ghadir Nezamipour, leader of the Iranian delegation, stated: “Attacks were launched from bases located on the territory of the United Arab Emirates.” He added: “We hope that the United Arab Emirates will respect the principles of good neighbourliness and choose the path of peace, stability, and regional cooperation.”
