Mirabai Chanu wins India's first gold at 2026 CWG, sets Games records
Mirabai Chanu won her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal and India's first gold of the 2026 Glasgow Games on Sunday. She set new Games and Commonwealth records with a total lift of 190kg (85kg snatch, 105kg clean and jerk).
Competing in the women's 49kg category, Chanu opened with a snatch attempt of 82kg, which was already a Games record. Although she failed her first attempt, she successfully lifted it on her second try. She then broke the Commonwealth record with her third lift of 85kg.
In the clean and jerk, she listed a Games record 105kg as her first lift. After an unsuccessful first attempt, she completed the lift on her second attempt, finishing with a total of 190kg.
Chanu's gold medal completes a hat-trick of Commonwealth Games titles. She won silver at the 2014 Glasgow Games, gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, and gold at the 2022 Birmingham Games. She also won silver at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first Indian weightlifter to achieve an Olympic medal.
The silver medal went to Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who lifted a total of 168kg (75kg snatch, 93kg clean and jerk). Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry won bronze with a total of 167kg.
Chanu's performance was notably ahead of the rest of the field. The next best snatch lift was 71kg by Nyong, and Chanu was the only lifter to achieve a clean and jerk in three figures.
