Minor girl found after 2 days, family acquaintance held for abduction and rape in Pilibhit
A minor girl who was missing since June 14 returned to her home in Pilibhit district on Tuesday, after which police arrested a 66-year-old family acquaintance on charges of kidnapping and rape. The accused, identified as Mohammad Umar, was known to the girl's family as they tended his goats on a profit-sharing arrangement.
According to Pilibhit Superintendent of Police Sukirti Madhav, the girl told her family upon her return that Umar had allegedly abducted her and taken her to another location where she was sexually assaulted. The family subsequently filed a police complaint. The police acted swiftly, arresting the accused within an hour of the complaint being registered.
Notably, the girl's family had not lodged a missing person report when she initially went missing on Sunday. Authorities have emphasised that timely reporting can significantly aid in rescue and investigation. The survivor's identity is being protected as per legal provisions, and her statement will be recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, which mandates stringent punishment for crimes against minors. Police said further investigation is underway to gather all evidence and ensure a fair trial.
The Pilibhit police have reiterated their commitment to zero tolerance for crimes against children and urged the public to immediately report any such incidents through the child helpline (1098) or local police stations. Community awareness and prompt action remain critical in safeguarding children.
