Ministers Assure Farmers of Committee to Study Crop Loan Waiver Demand

Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment S. Ramesh, Minister for Cooperatives V. Gandhiraj, Minister for Agriculture R. Vinod, and Deputy Speaker M. Ravishankar held talks with leaders of farmers' organisations on Tuesday. The meeting, held at the Collector Office, was convened after the farmers' organisations called for a protest demanding a total waiver of crop loans.

The meeting was also attended by Registrar of Cooperatives G. Latha, Collector Pratik Tayal, Director of Agriculture K.V. Muralidharan, and senior officials. The farmers' representatives insisted that the State government waive crop loans fully without any conditions.

Earlier in the day, a large number of farmers belonging to various associations staged a protest near the Samayapuram toll plaza. The protest was part of their demand for a complete waiver of crop loans, which they say is essential to alleviate the debt burden on the farming community.

During the meeting, the Ministers gave a patient hearing to the grievances of the farmers' representatives. They explained the pro-active steps taken by the State government to protect the livelihood of farmers on all aspects. They told the farmers that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had been working to uplift farmers and the downtrodden.

While assuring that the demands of the farmers would be taken to the notice of the government, the Ministers said that a committee would be constituted to study their demands. The committee is expected to examine the feasibility of a full crop loan waiver and submit its recommendations to the government.

Crop loan waiver has been a long-standing demand of farmers' organisations across India. Farmers argue that mounting debt, often exacerbated by crop failures, rising input costs, and unpredictable weather, pushes them into a cycle of poverty. A waiver, they say, would provide immediate relief and help them avoid falling into the trap of private moneylenders.

However, economists and policy experts often caution that loan waivers can strain state finances and may not address the structural issues plaguing agriculture.
