Minister Launches ₹211 Crore Water Projects to Solve Nandyal's Drinking Water Crisis

Minority Welfare Minister N. Md. Farooq announced that the AMRUT 2.0 scheme will provide a permanent solution to the drinking water issues in Nandyal town. Speaking at a foundation-laying ceremony, the Minister, accompanied by District Collector Rajakumari Ganiya, launched several key infrastructure projects.

The Minister laid the foundation stone for a comprehensive water treatment plant (WTP) with a capacity of 16 million litres per day (MLD), to be constructed at a cost of ₹38.75 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. The plant will be located within the premises of the Head Water Works on Mahanandi road.

Mr. Farooq expressed happiness at the launch of these projects, noting that the current storage of 1.7 tmcft of water in the Velugodu reservoir is contributing to groundwater recharge. He urged farmers to cultivate less water-intensive crops instead of paddy, citing the possibility of water scarcity in the district due to El Nino effects.

The Minister highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had praised Nandyal district during his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme for effective implementation of groundwater conservation, tank restoration, and water preservation measures. The Prime Minister's special mention of Ms. Rajakumari's efforts was described as national-level recognition of the district administration's collective performance.

Collector Rajakumari Ganiya explained that the Minister laid foundation stones for three major development projects in Nandyal constituency at a total estimated cost of ₹211 crore. These include a minor tank rejuvenation project (₹3.50 crore), a sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity of 32 MLD (₹169.67 crore), and the water treatment plant (16 MLD, ₹38.75 crore).

She assured that upon completion, these projects will ensure clean drinking water availability for Nandyal residents and eliminate future shortages. The sewage treatment plant will treat sewage scientifically before environmentally friendly release, providing a permanent solution to drainage issues. The tank rejuvenation will increase groundwater levels in surrounding areas and strengthen local water resources.

The Collector confirmed that all three projects will be completed within the stipulated timeframe while adhering to quality standards and will be made available to the public.
