Media Unions Allege Overreach in Searches at Journalist Ravi Nair's Residences

The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) and the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) Delhi Unit have condemned the searches conducted by the Gujarat police at the residences of journalist Ravi Nair in Delhi and Kerala on Monday, August 17, 2026. The organisations described the action as a direct assault on media freedom and press independence.

According to a joint statement issued by the two unions, the searches were carried out in connection with a First Information Report (FIR) related to a Washington Post report co-authored by Mr. Nair. During the searches, the police seized two mobile phones and pen drives from Mr. Nair's home in Kerala. In Delhi, they also seized the laptop of Mr. Nair's son and the laptop and iPad of his colleague, neither of whom are accused in the case.

The unions expressed concern that the police did not provide hash values of the seized devices, which are unique digital fingerprints used to verify that electronic evidence has not been altered. This raises concerns about possible tampering, the statement said.

The organisations alleged that Mr. Nair had been singled out in the case, “that too, apparently for tweeting the story he wrote for Washington Post”. They noted that neither the Washington Post nor the co-authors of the report faced any prosecution. The unions demanded the immediate return of the devices belonging to Mr. Nair's son and his colleague.

The searches have reignited debates about press freedom in India. Journalist unions and press freedom advocates have often raised concerns about the use of police powers against reporters covering sensitive issues. The DUJ and KUWJ have urged authorities to act within the legal framework and ensure that investigative actions do not intimidate journalists or impede their work.

The Gujarat police have not yet issued a detailed public response to the allegations. The FIR is based on the Washington Post report, which the authorities have deemed objectionable. The legal proceedings are ongoing.

Observers note that the case underscores the challenges journalists face when reporting on matters that may be politically sensitive. However, the unions' statement focuses on the procedural irregularities, particularly the seizure of devices belonging to individuals not named in the FIR.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
