Maya Rahul Elected Pala Municipality Chairperson as LDF and Rebel Congress Councillors Unite

Ending nearly seven weeks of political uncertainty, Maya Rahul was elected chairperson of the Pala municipality in Kerala on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. The election took place more than a month after a no-confidence motion removed the previous chairperson, Diya Binu Pulikkandam.

Ms. Rahul, an Independent councillor representing Ward 19, secured 16 votes in the 26-member council. She received the support of all 12 Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors, three Congress councillors who had defied their party whip, and her own vote. The United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, Riya Bino Cheeramkuzhi, received 10 votes.

The development follows a period of political realignment in the municipality, which is located in Kottayam district. Ms. Rahul had been functioning as acting chairperson since the removal of Ms. Pulikkandam through a no-confidence motion moved by the LDF on July 21, 2026. That motion was passed with the support of four Congress councillors and Ms. Rahul, who was then the vice-chairperson. The Congress councillors had defied the party whip, which directed them not to participate in the discussion on the motion.

Political observers attribute the rift within the UDF to differences between the Congress councillors and Ms. Rahul on one side, and the three-member Independent collective representing the Pulikkandam family on the other. The LDF sought to capitalise on this division to gain control of the civic body.

Prior to the election, one of the rebel Congress councillors, Lissikutty Mathew, returned to the UDF fold following differences over the candidature of Ms. Rahul. This reduced the number of Congress dissidents from four to three, but it did not alter the arithmetic in favour of the UDF, as the LDF and its supporters retained a clear majority.

Ms. Pulikkandam, who was a member of the three-member Independent collective, had earlier gained recognition as the country's youngest municipal chairperson. Her tenure, however, lasted only around six months before the no-confidence motion was moved against her.

The 26-member municipal council comprises 12 LDF councillors. The UDF had 14 members at the start of the term, including six Congress councillors, three Kerala Congress members, three members of the Independent group, one member of the Kerala Democratic Party, and Ms. Rahul, who won as an Independent. With three Congress councillors now supporting the LDF-backed candidate, the UDF's strength has effectively reduced to 11 in the recent election.

Meanwhile, the Kottayam District Congress Committee has moved a petition before the State Election Commission seeking the disqualification of the rebel Congress councillors. The petition alleges that they violated the anti-defection law by voting against the party's official position, even though the whip was issued. The Election Commission will now examine whether the actions of the three councillors constitute defection under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which deals with disqualification on grounds of defection.

The election of Ms. Rahul marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Pala, a municipality known for its strong party loyalties. The coming together of the LDF and a section of Congress councillors reflects the fluid nature of local politics, where municipal issues and personal equations often override broader party affiliations. The legal challenge pending before the State Election Commission adds another layer of complexity, and its outcome could have implications for the stability of the newly elected chairperson's majority.

For now, Ms. Rahul is set to lead the municipality with the support of the LDF and the dissident Congress members. The citizens of Pala will watch closely as the new administration addresses the civic challenges facing the town, including infrastructure development, waste management, and basic services. The political uncertainty of the past few weeks has tested the democratic process at the grassroots level, and the peaceful conduct of the election through secret ballot underscores the resilience of local self-governance institutions in Kerala.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
